Work we’re proud of.

From backyard pruning to 2,200-acre management plans, here’s a sample of our work with landowners, land trusts and agencies.

Crescent Beach Preserve fuel reduction

With the San Juan County Land Bank and the Department of Natural Resources, we thinned and reduced fuels across 32 acres of the beloved preserve, awarded after a competitive bid against nine other firms.

Blakely Island shaded fuel break

Spring 2025, with DNR and Blakely Island Timber Company: nearly 4 miles of shaded fuel break along the main access road, 100 feet deep on each side, with all material broadcast chipped on site.

Blakely Island forest management plan

Completed in 2014, with ongoing management that helped 2,200 acres of forestland become FSC certified.

Turtleback demonstration thinning

After writing the Action Plan for Forest Health and Climate Change Resiliency, our crew thinned 2.6 upland acres and built a shaded fuel break along about 600 feet of the South Trail.

Community Land Trust thinning

A 14-acre fuels reduction and stand improvement project, partly funded by USDA’s EQIP, using local labor and the Washington Conservation Corps.

Golden paintbrush outplanting

With The Nature Conservancy and USFWS, we outplant and monitor the federally threatened golden paintbrush.

Waterfront buildings and docks beneath a forested hillside

Friday Harbor Labs fire safety

In fall 2014 we created defensible space around campus buildings by careful pruning and tree removal, keeping its woodsy feel.

Totem pole installation

We co-managed transport and installation of a 30-foot, hand-carved Tlingit-style pole by Scott Jensen, rigging it and directing the 200-person raising crew.

50-acre variable density thinning

In 2012 we thinned a 70-year-old Douglas-fir stand to add diversity, lower fuel loads and speed old-growth character.

I have had the good fortune to observe Rain Shadow Consulting during three projects: Garry Oak restoration, forest health management on logged-over land, and forest health inspection. These efforts ranged from a single forest walk to multi-year projects.
